Who are we?

Gilmour's Comfort Shoes is a family business now in its fourth generation. We started life as a general store in the Melbourne suburb of Mordialloc in 1906 and opened our first shoe store in Glen Huntly in 1919. In the 1960s the family recognized the comfort specialist area of the footwear trade as one that was not well represented in Melbourne and consequentially changed to a more specialised business model.

Since then we have become Melbourne's (as well as Brisbane's and Sydney's) largest stockist of Orthopaedic, extra depth and specialised fitting footwear. We carry extreme fitting shoes, for example Bates, an American brand making for the American military make shoes up to size men's 26, they stock them up to size 20, you guessed it we have them, in two widths M (D) and XW (EEE).

Another great supplier of extreme sizes for us is a local manufacturer called Novat Footwear, making the Aptidudes brand. They make mainly ladies bridal and dress shoes but also many special purpose shoes as well. One of their styles, Dorrie (pictured below) is available up to a ladies 16 which is the equivalent to a men's 14. Novat also make the widest dress sandal we have ever seen. It is made on what we know as the Princess last (see Shoe Terminology), and is a magnificent fitter for very wide feet. One style on this last is Stephanie (also pictured below) and has proven to be an instant classic for us.

Magdesians, a Californian manufacturer of dress shoes, also make many extreme sizes and widths. Almost all of their styles are available from AAA to EE. This is becoming increasingly rare in the footwear trade as most manufacturers try to cut costs by reducing the number of widths and sizes.
